About this project
The Mpowerment Project is an evidence-based health intervention that aims to reduce HIV transmission among gay youth by changing norms around relationships, safer sex and what it means to have a healthy gay community.

Our goal is to have 20% of young gay/bi/trans guys (about 1000 guys) attend the M-Group health leadership training over the next 2 years.  The 20% mark is the tipping point for changing cultural norms around safer sex and HIV testing in the community, making it more likely that behaviours will change at the population level, reducing the incidence of HIV in our community.

By building community and making social connections, we are part of the solution to reduce the spread of HIV among our friends and in our social groups.
Project Impact
  • 1000 guys will take part in the M-Group health leadership training, learning safer sex and healthy relationship tools to disseminate through their social networks
  • Increase condom use and decrease unprotected sex among Vancouver gay/bi/trans male youth
  • Increase risk reduction behaviours among Vancouver gay/bi/trans male youth
  • Increase grassroots support for HIV prevention activities
  • And ultimately, decrease HIV incidence rates
Use of project funds
  • 10 M-Group workshop sessions (includes staff time, materials, project space, and snacks) @ $200 each = $2000
Project milestones
  • Our launch event is the "Sticky and Sweet Party" - a kick-off to the Canada Day long weekend on Friday June 29th at Caya on Davie St. @ Howe St.
  • Every month, we will hold a small event (<50 people) to recruit participants and new volunteers
  • Every month, we will hold an M-Group health leadership training session
  • Every three months , we will hold a large event (~100 people) to recruit new participants and new volunteers
  • Within 2 years time, we plan on having 1000 guys complete the M-Group health leadership training
